Mise-en-scène
Collective show at Safehouse 2, Peckham, 02/2024
"Mise-en-scène," a French term meaning "placing on stage," is typically applied within the realms of filmmaking, theater, and other visual arts to describe the arrangement of elements within the frame or on the stage.
Curated by RCA Curating Contemporary Art students Bingning Meng and Giada Holland and Goldsmiths MFA Curating student Buyun Wang, this exhibition endeavors to explore the distinctive perspectives and creative techniques that artists contribute to the "mise-en-scène." By looking at interpretations of stage design in both film and theater, actor placement, and various elements present in film or theatrical productions, we uncover how "mise-en-scène" can serve as a conceptual tool for artists to convey their visions.
Safehouse is transformed into an experimental space, offering artists a non-traditional gallery setting to liberally and intuitively showcase their creative methods. "Mise-en-scène" guides audiences in understanding the artist's creative world and how they construct a distinctive artistic language. Becoming a bridge for communication between creators and audiences, new ideas and reflections are sparked for the practical application of "mise-en-scène" in the art-making process.
